Just when I gave myself a pat on the back for doing an average of just 1 purchase a month the entire 2023, I realized I left out 2 items. These sneakers that have been on constant rotation, it felt like I’ve had them forever…
And these pants, that I forgot I ordered in December and only got last month when family came home from LA and brought them home.
Here’s the thing, I love these two items and can’t imagine not having them in my wardrobe. So limiting purchases to 5 new items in 2023 is impossible at this point. LOL.
For transparency, I also want to share that I maxed out the 5 item rule last month. Yes that same month I wrote about it. As you recall, I obliviously bought 2 linen pieces in January in Bangkok. Then this Bode tote I’ve been stalking in MyTheresa for months went on sale, so I got it. That makes 3 things.
And then I made the mistake of browsing around Uniqlo while waiting to pick up family going around the art fair, so I ended up getting these. It’s a set, so that makes five.
I’d like to think I put a lot of thought to this purchase, and the idea of wearing this pale pink linen blend set for the heat of our tropical summer was just so appealing. Like an icy beverage on a hot, sweaty day, it was impossible to resist.
This leaves me with no room for fashion purchases the rest of the year. Although as the Rule of 5 goes, lingerie, socks and second hand items are fair game (Tiffanie sticks to 4 max for preloved pieces). So there’s still that!
On the upside, I haven’t bought anything this March, so it’s actually quite doable to go on a “Buy Nothing” month. Even with plans to travel this summer, it’s a first that I don’t have anything in my shopping list, so I am not too worried about breaking any rules.
But the experience last month taught me that the lack of self-control isn’t limited to when I’m traveling. My recent purchases were done while I was right here, and I just made excuses for myself again. This also tells me that I should never speak too soon.
In terms of growing in self-awareness, I’d like to think that’s progress!
The memories! I had those Nike Rifts in the aughts and wore them non-stop for years. I may need to repurchase.
